Apple shares research data on World Hearing Day

On March 3, Apple shared the main results of the “Apple Hearing Research” on the occasion of World Hearing Day to encourage people to better understand and manage their hearing health. The research data comes from thousands of participants across the United States.

According to the announcement of the World Health Organization, the theme of World Hearing Day 2021 is: Caring for the hearing health of all people. The World Hearing Report released by the WHO on the 2nd local time shows that one-fifth of the world’s people are currently hearing impaired, and hearing loss affects more than 1.5 billion people worldwide.

Apple stated that 25% of participants are exposed to environmental noise from traffic, machinery or public transportation every day, which is above the WHO recommended limit. Nearly 50% of study participants now or have previously worked in noisy workplaces.

About 10% of the participants were diagnosed with hearing loss by professionals, and 75% of them did not use auxiliary support such as hearing aids or cochlear implants. Compared with WHO standards, 20% of participants had hearing loss, and 10% of participants had hearing loss consistent with noise exposure. Nearly 50% of participants have not received a professional hearing test for at least 10 years. 25% of participants experienced tinnitus several times a week or more, which may be a sign of hearing loss.

According to Apple, by 2050, WHO estimates that more than 700 million people worldwide will experience deep hearing loss. The results of Apple’s hearing research can be obtained through the Apple’s Research application, which was carried out in cooperation with the University of Michigan School of Public Health, and the research data was shared with the WHO.
