iOS 14.5 is the biggest update of iOS 14 to date, introducing a number of important new features. First of all, through the new “Unlock via Apple Watch” function, Apple makes it easier for you to unlock your iPhone while wearing a mask.

This option allows you to use the unlocked and certified Apple Watch as a secondary authentication method to unlock the iPhone together with Face ID. With this feature, you no longer need to enter a password or remove the mask to unlock your iPhone.

Both iPhone and Apple Watch running iOS 14.5 can use this feature. Apple Watch cannot verify Apple Pay purchases, App Store purchases, or unlock third-party applications that use Face ID.

Starting with iOS 14.5 and iPadOS 14.5, users will be able to use Apple’s built-in Find My app to track selected non-Apple branded products, such as Beats headphones and upcoming Belkin wireless headphones.

This update also brings the iPhone 12 model’s global support for 5G networks in dual-SIM mode. If you use multiple lines, both lines can now be connected at 5G speeds. Prior to this, the dual-SIM mode was limited to LTE networks.

watchOS 7.4 and iOS/iPadOS 14.5 include AirPlay 2 support for Apple Fitness+, so Apple Fitness+ users can start exercising on their iPhone or iPad, and then AirPlay to a compatible smart TV or set-top box. AirPlay 2 supports audio and video, but it cannot display exercise indicators on the screen.

iOS/iPadOS 14.5 adds support for PlayStation 5 DualSense and Xbox Series X control handles. The code shows that Apple will add support for Apple Card family joint accounts in the near future.

In iOS 14.5, a crowdsourcing feature similar to Waze has been added. When getting the route on the map, you can report accidents, hazards, and speed checks along the way.

There is a new “Report” button in the Apple Maps app that allows you to click to report an accident, hazard, or speed trap at your location in the Apple Maps app. This is a feature provided by the Waze map app. This can be used directly in both iPhone and CarPlay.

In the iOS 14.5 beta, there are several new emojis. Apple has introduced heart-fire, heart-filling, exhaled face, spiral eye face, cloud face, and also provides different gender options for people with beards. In addition, there are new couple expressions and new skin color combinations.

Apple removed the blood in the syringe emoji, updated the earphone emoji to make it look like AirPods Max instead of a set of ordinary earphones, and added a helmet to the rock climbing emoji.

The iOS 14.5 beta version solves the screen green tint problem encountered by some iPhone users. Apple confirmed that the beta version has “optimization” to help solve this problem.

“IOS/iPadOS 14.5 beta 2 includes an optimization to reduce the appearance of dim light that may appear under reduced brightness levels and black backgrounds,” reads the Apple iOS 14.5 beta description. For some users, it has improved due to optimization, but for other users, this problem seems to still exist, so Apple may have some work to do.

iOS/iPadOS 14.5 adds a new feature, you can choose the default streaming music service to use with Siri. Therefore, if you prefer Spotify to Apple Music, for example, you can now choose Spotify as the default app to use with Siri, and all Siri song requests will be made through Spotify without adding “on Spotify” at the end of the Siri request.

iOS 14.5 is an update where Apple will begin to require developers to comply with its app tracking transparency rules. In the future, developers will need to solicit and obtain user permission to access random advertising identifiers and track your activities on apps and websites.

Apple has made design adjustments to the Apple News and Podcasts applications, and there are also new printing and sorting options in reminders. There are also new emergency reminder settings, the iPad’s horizontal loading screen, and a lot of other minor feature adjustments.
