Google Pixel phones can use the camera to monitor heart rate and measure respiratory rate

Google said last month that it will soon add some interesting new features to the Fit application of its Pixel smartphone. Users will be able to measure their heart rate by placing their fingers on the rear camera, and the ability to measure breathing rate through selfies. According to AndroidvPolice reports, Google will launch these two new Fit Mobile Vitals (mobile vital signs) features today.

During heart rate monitoring, users only need to cover the rear camera with their fingers, and “press lightly” when fully covered. The camera sensor can then determine the heart rate by tracking the color change of the blood as the fingertip moves (called a “pulse photoacoustic signal”). The user can save the measurement result to the heart rate log.

When measuring the breathing rate, the user needs to take a selfie, place the upper body in the viewfinder, and then breathe. The software monitors the ups and downs of the user’s chest and infers the breathing rate based on this. Similarly, the user can save the measurement results to the log.

According to Google’s internal research, the error of the respiratory rate function is within one breath per minute, and it can be used by people with or without health conditions. The heart rate reading error is within 2%. These features have been tested on people of different skin tones, and the accuracy is about the same.

Google said that this is not a substitute for medical testing or treatment of any condition, but now users can easily use these two measurement methods through a mobile phone, without the need for external hardware. And all this is handled on the mobile device, so users don’t have to worry about the video staring at the camera while breathing will spread on the Internet.

Android Police said that these features may be applied to non-Pixel phones in the future, but it is not clear when. In addition, the Pixel 2 series may not provide these two features, because it no longer accepts updates.
