Google fitness app can monitor heart rate and breathing with the help of Pixel smartphone cameras

Although there are currently many fitness tracker products with a large number of sensors, the Google Fit team has proposed a set of novel solutions based on smartphone cameras. A video shared by Android Partner Academy shows that it can use Pixel’s camera component to measure the user’s heart rate and breathing rate.

Considering that some people don’t like to be constrained by fitness trackers for a long time, this combination of software and hardware obviously has its place. It should be pointed out that although Google did not mention it in the instructional video, it is nothing new to monitor heart rate with the help of mobile phone cameras.

In short, this solution requires the use of a camera to measure the pulse on the user’s fingertips to infer the approximate heart rate. As for breathing detection, although it seems more difficult to implement, with the help of the Pixel front camera to record a short video, Google Fit can also estimate the user’s breathing rate through a complex set of algorithms.

Of course, this camera-based algorithm cannot replace proprietary medical equipment. Even so, it is still a pretty good life habit for ordinary people to learn about their health on a regular basis.

It is worth mentioning that Google claims that all video streams will only be processed in real-time on the device side (not on the server-side), so you don’t need to worry about any data leakage during transmission.

After the test is over, users can choose whether to save the results in the Google Fit app. However, in order to enhance the accuracy, please try to remove the jewelry while recording video accessories, and a few minutes after the start of the movement stable detection.
