Microsoft pushes Intel microcode update KB4589212 and AMD devices can’t be skipped

On March 10th, Microsoft once again pushed the KB4589212 (Intel microcode) update for some Windows 10 devices. Although the update is applicable to the designated Intel processors, the download will also be displayed on AMD devices and cannot be skipped. If the user pauses the update today, it will be automatically downloaded and deployed after the update resumes.

Last year, Microsoft stated that KB4589212 only applies to Windows 10 20H1, 20H2 and Windows Server. The update also includes Intel microcode fixes for all released operating systems. However, as an Intel CPU microcode update, Microsoft has also pushed it to AMD CPU devices. The update has no effect on non-Intel CPUs, which means that even if it is downloaded and installed on unsupported Intel and AMD processors, nothing will happen.

These Intel microcode updates should be to fix hardware vulnerabilities and also require software and firmware changes. The microcode update was first released for Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities require a large number of security updates from Microsoft, Intel, and OEM manufacturers. Users can go to the Windows Update page to check for updates and download them manually. You can also visit the Microsoft Update Directory here and search for related KB articles.
