Microsoft Edge on macOS launches native update experience in Canary channel

Microsoft Edge on macOS will soon get the native update experience that Windows users have been enjoying since its launch. The new feature has been launched in Edge Canary version 90.0.816.0 or later, but it is currently only available on Intel-based Macs and must be enabled through the edge://flags menu.

On macOS, Microsoft Edge updates are currently through the same Microsoft AutoUpdate application that the company uses to update non-Mac App Store versions of Office for Mac.

The Edge team admits that this process can be confusing and slow, especially the edge://settings/help page “is not always consistent with the latest version on Microsoft AutoUpdate in terms of showing update availability.”

Through this new Edge native experience, Edge updates will be processed in the browser and installed automatically in the background, just like it does when working on Windows. When an update is available, the pop-up notification of the Microsoft AutoUpdate application will be replaced by the mark at the top of the application’s Ellipsis menu.

This new native update experience needs to be pushed through different Insider channels of Edge in order to be widely used on macOS. Yesterday, the Edge team also stated that it will soon launch a usable version on a Mac equipped with the M1 chip.
