Google now allows third-party developers to customize Tiles on WearOS

Google recently launched the Alpha version of the Jetpack Tiles library, allowing third-party developers to create custom Tiles on Wear OS smartwatches. Since the introduction of Tiles to Wear OS in 2019, users can only use 6 Tiles, but this situation will soon change.

Although developers can now start to develop their own custom Tiles, for ordinary users still need to wait for a while, Google plans to release Wear OS updates later this spring. Once developers start to develop their own custom Tiles, they will enable users to interact with various applications on their watches or mobile phones in a faster way than they do today.

Developer Relations Engineer Jolanda Verhoef said: “Tiles can be used in a wide range of scenarios, such as tracking the user’s daily activity progress, quickly starting exercises, launching recently played songs, or sending messages to favorite contacts. Although the application can be immersive Yes, but Tiles loads quickly and focuses on the user’s immediate needs. If users want to learn more, they can click on Tiles to open the relevant application on the watch or mobile phone to get a deeper experience.”

If you want to start using Tiles, you should go to the Android Developers page, the page bread contains all the elements you need to start. If you want some inspiration, Google has created a GitHub repository with plenty of code examples.
