Chrome 90 now supports window naming feature to improve tab search and navigation experience

Techdows pointed out that when multiple browser windows are open and each window is accompanied by multiple tabs, it is obviously not an easy task to find and switch to the correct page. The good news is that Google is trying to solve this aspect of the Chromium kernel browser experience through the “window naming” (Windows Naming) feature.

It is reported that this option in the browser frame and the “More Tools” menu will allow users to specify a name for a specific window. Google once missed this feature on Chrome 88, but Chrome 90/Edge 90 has accepted this feature.

After enabling, users will be able to easily switch to the correct page when multiple browser windows/tabs are opened. And users can organize the windows with different tags, such as categorized into reading, private, and work.

It is worth mentioning that when you hover the mouse over the taskbar icon or the Dock bar on the Mac, you can view the window label and easily switch to the right window. In addition, since the named windows remain unchanged between threads, they will also restore themselves the next time the Chrome browser is restarted.

But before that, please make sure that the Chrome startup option is set to “Continue where you left off”, otherwise the feature will not work properly. Interested friends, please refer to the following operations to enable the “Window Naming” function of Chrome 90/Edge 90:

  • Launch Chrome or Edge browser;
  • Make sure that at least two tabs are opened;
  • Right-click on the browser window frame and select “Name Window”, or find the item in the “More Tools” menu;
  • After entering a name in the text box of’Name this window’, click ok.

If you don’t want to be so troublesome, you can also consider installing the beta version of Chrome 90 or Edge 90 that has this feature enabled by default.
