Microsoft Windows 10 Linux subsystem already supports Windows Hello authentication

An important feature of Microsoft Windows 10 is the Linux subsystem, also called WSL, which allows users to use Windows 10 and Linux systems at the same time. According to the XDA report, a Japanese developer recently released an open-source project on GitHub that enables the Linux subsystem to support Windows Hello.

As can be seen from the figure, when the user enters sudo in the Ubuntu-20.04 subsystem to raise the privileges of the super user, Win10 automatically pops up the Windows Hello face recognition, and the privileges can be correctly elevated after the recognition is successful.

Join Our Windows Channel On TelegramThe project consists of a pluggable authentication module (PAM) and a companion Windows application responsible for invoking Windows Hello. The PAM module is responsible for mapping the authentication request of a Linux user to the corresponding Windows 10 user’s Windows Hello signature.

Due to the modular design, this project can be used not only for WSL2 but also for the previous generation of WSL. The user needs to download the pre-compiled binary file, execute the install.sh script under the Linux subsystem, and then configure the process through the PAM module.
