Microsoft Windows 10 taskbar search will deeply integrate Edge browser and support native dark mode

According to the Windows Latest report, Windows 10’s taskbar search is one of the most powerful tools in the operating system, partly because of its powerful integration of Microsoft services. But so far, it lacks decent integration with the Chromium version of the Edge browser and has semi-finished cooperation.

Now, this situation has changed, because Microsoft has begun testing a new feature for the Chromium version of Edge, which will achieve deep integration with Windows Search (that is, “Start” menu search or taskbar search).

In Windows 10 version 2004/20H2 or later, Windows Search will be able to extract information directly from Edge. Therefore, if you open a tab in Edge, you can find it directly through Windows Search.

Your favorites/bookmarks, browsing history, top websites and recent tags will also appear in Windows search results. In fact, if you enable synchronization in Microsoft Edge and the browser is installed on your mobile device, you can also access your mobile browsing history.

It’s worth noting that this integration is completely one-way, which means you can’t use Microsoft Edge to find your files on Windows. As you can see in the screenshot, this will be an optional feature that will connect the local browsing data in the current synchronization profile with other parts of Windows.

According to Microsoft, you can disable this feature at any time, Edge will delete the data shared with Windows and suspend the integration. In Microsoft Edge Canary, some testers can use this feature, and it’s easy to set up, but it doesn’t seem to be available yet.

Other improvements in Windows search

The search box in Windows 10 currently only supports light themes, which may not be ideal for users who like a consistent dark experience. Fortunately, Microsoft is also testing the native dark mode support for Windows Search, and this feature has been launched in the beta version. In addition to Edge integration and dark mode, there are plans to enable weather and news widgets in the Windows search layout.
