Samsung and Marvell announce the launch of new energy-efficient SoCs

Samsung and Marvell have announced the joint development of a new system-on-chip (SoC) designed to improve 5G network performance. The SoC will be used in Samsung’s Massive MIMO and other advanced radio station communication solutions, and the goal is to market to Tier 1 operators in the second quarter of 2021.

According to Samsung, the SoC is designed to help implement new technologies to improve cellular radios by increasing capacity and coverage, while reducing power consumption and size. The new SoC can support both 5G and 4G networks.

In addition, compared with the previous solution, it can save up to 70% in energy usage. The new SoC also uses newer technologies to increase the capacity and coverage of cellular radios, while the body can also be made smaller.

Samsung and Marvell have been working closely to provide network solutions. Last year, the two companies announced a collaboration to develop new 5G products, including an innovative radio architecture, to solve the computing power required for Massive MIMO deployment.

The two companies announced last year to expand the scope of cooperation to jointly research more areas of radio access network (RAN) technology. At that time, the two companies stated that they hope to create products that can meet the “dramatic increase in computing power required” for massive MIMO deployments.

So far, Samsung has successfully delivered 5G end-to-end solutions including chipsets, radios and cores. It also provides fully virtualized RAN and Core to private network solutions and AI-driven automation tools to promote the development of 5G networks in the industry. The products announced today will be available in the second quarter.
