Microsoft is moving the Windows 10 taskbar out of the Explorer.exe process

One of the visual differences between Windows 10 and Windows 10X is the taskbar. The taskbar in Windows 10X uses a centered icon. Microsoft also seems to intend to make some changes to the taskbar in Windows 10, because the technician Albacore found that Microsoft seems to intend to move its code out of the shell Explorer.exe and put it into its own proprietary DLL-Taskbar.dll.

The latest Insider build of Windows 10 201H2 includes a new component Taskbar.dll, which seems to be a functional replacement of the code in Explorer.exe. Taskbar.dll has not started to be officially called, but it seems to be used except that the search bar is not working properly.

Moving the taskbar code out of Explorer.exe should allow Microsoft to modify the component more quickly. It also has reliability benefits, so that the crash of one component will not affect another component.

We should see these changes appear in the next major version of Windows 10, the so-called “Sun Valley” update, which will bring many visual improvements to the operating system.
