Microsoft apologizes to developers for removing the Pivot control in WinUI 3

WinUI 3 is a user interface layer for desktop and UWP applications, combining UWP’s XAML visual layer and WinUI 2 library, as well as more modern functional components. The embarrassing thing is that although Microsoft has been working closely with developers to develop and extend the library. But after the Pivot control was removed from WinUI 3, it still caused controversy on GitHub for several weeks.

The explanation given by Microsoft is that due to the low usage rate, they removed the control without notice and hoped to push the Fluent design in another direction. However, the actual situation is that many of Microsoft’s own applications are still using Pivot controls (such as the feedback center). As a result, developers who want to implement similar features in their applications need to spend a considerable amount of work.

At present, the grievances of developers are mainly focused on Microsoft’s inability to correctly understand the needs of developers. In this regard, Microsoft’s chief project director Ryan Demopoulos said that they have reflected on it and sincerely apologize to the majority of developers.

After all, only listening to the guidance of the design and PM team, using highly suspicious data to prove relevant decisions, and ignoring the strong needs of developers (or customers), this situation should not have happened.

Ryan Demopoulos added that WinUI is an ambitious product. The reason for deleting Pivot is not its low usage rate, but the desire to push the product and the Fluent design itself into different development directions. In the future, before implementing relevant decisions, they will carefully evaluate telemetry data and public opinions to avoid serious damage to the development experience.

Finally, Ryan Demopoulos believes that he should take the main responsibility for this mistake and will resume the introduction of Pivot in WinUI 3 as soon as possible.
