Apple iPad first-generation prototype leaked

A new picture shared on Twitter this week claimed to show an early prototype of the first generation of iPad. These pictures show that Apple has considered providing some kind of docking system for the device.

Twitter user Giulio Zompetti shared three pictures showing a prototype of an iPad 1 and detailed a mysterious port on the left side of the device. This port seems to be just the second 30-pin connector. “Initially, Apple plans to use a dual dock system on its first tablet. The second port is on the left side of the device. Apparently, it supports simultaneous charging.”

According to Zompetti, the port was removed in the later DVT development phase. As a reference, Apple’s hardware development usually goes through EVT (Engineering Verification Test), DVT (Design Verification Test) and PVT (Production Verification Test) stages.

This is not the first time we have heard that Apple intends to launch the iPad 1 with two dock connectors. One of the prototypes was actually auctioned on eBay in 2012. Reports over the years have shown that Jobs cancelled this idea when it was close to the official release of the iPad.

On the first-generation iPad, Apple did sell a keyboard dock separately for $69. This keyboard is connected to the iPad through the 30-pin connector at the bottom, but unfortunately, it is a rather short-lived accessory.

Today, Apple has accepted this idea more openly and launched Smart Connector for charging and connecting Smart Keyboard and Magic Keyboard. Although Apple may initially have larger plans for Smart Connector, in fact, we rarely see third-party accessories using it in recent years.
