Ubuntu on Windows community preview released

In recent years, Microsoft has continued to improve Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) and continue to add new features. Today, Ubuntu Linux manufacturer Canonical released Ubuntu on Windows Community Preview, which is a special version built specifically for WSL 2, allowing users to experiment with new features and functions in a sandbox environment.

Canonical’s Sohini Bianka Roy said: “The new Ubuntu on Windows Community Preview is our way of thanking the community and providing us with a space to shape the future of Ubuntu on WSL together.” It will “match the speed of open source innovation” and allow the community to test new features “at a faster speed and a shorter pace”.

Features of Ubuntu on Windows Community Preview include:

  • Ubuntu WSL Out-Of-Box experience

The user-friendly setup interface for the first run based on “subiquity” (the same installer used by the Ubuntu server) allows you to perform additional custom environments after the first run.

  • Ubuntu WSL command line interface ubuntuwsl

A tool that allows you to configure your WSL distribution at any time

  • Windows Terminal Fragment Extension:

An extension under development provides an entry point on the Windows Terminal.

The only way to get Ubuntu on Windows Community Preview is to download it through the Microsoft Store. Please note that the new version is not for everyone. Canonical stated that its goal is for those who want to help “test and enhance WSL’s upcoming new features,” not as a daily driver.
