New patent shows that Apple is researching faster ways to correct typing errors

Apple hopes that iOS will be able to find out which letters are wrong, instead of just discovering the entire word that was typed incorrectly, and delete those wrong letters instantly with little user intervention, and keep the correct letters.

Apple designer Ken Kocienda invented the on-screen keyboard that later became the iPhone, and it has been 15 years. Since then, Apple has improved it, introduced features such as Slide to Type, and it has been applying for patents on automatic correction ideas one after another. Now, it has received another patent, and this patent is about speeding up the way we deal with typos.

Apple’s patent called “Smart Typographic Error Removal” does not care about common problems of finding errors when you type, although this is part of it. Currently, if you make a mistake, then you can click Delete several times to delete each letter. Or, with the introduction of Slide to Type, Apple also added the option to delete Slide to Type by Word. After opening, move your finger from the wrong word to the delete key, and the entire wrong word will be deleted for you.

This patent wants to speed up the speed by quickly deleting some of the wrong words. For example, if you type the first few letters correctly, Apple proposes that everything except these two letters should be automatically deleted. The idea is that you see an error, you don’t have to delete the entire word, and you don’t have to bother to move the cursor, and you don’t have to click to delete it multiple times. The iPhone will move the cursor back after the last correct letter, and then erase the remaining part of the word error.

Apple said that after the user enters a character sequence, this technology will identify errors in the character sequence and automatically correct them. At present, users can correct the entire character sequence through the auto-correction function, and the auto-correction function sometimes cannot provide replacement words that accurately reflect the user’s intention to input. This technology allows the user to effectively delete the character corresponding to the input error and restart/continue to input the character.
