Nintendo announces future plans focus on developing new game IP

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa has stated that in the future, in addition to continuing to support its core series, the company will also focus more on developing original game IP. Nintendo has many gaming IPs, but most IPs were created in the 1980s and 1990s. In the past few decades, Nintendo has mainly focused on expanding these series, rather than creating new IP.

In the past 20 years, Nintendo’s original IPs include “Splatoon” (2015), “Wii Sports” (2006) and “Pikmin” (2001). In an interview with Nikkei Shimbun, Furukawa said that the company will be committed to creating more original game series, emphasizing that the company needs to continue to innovate to maintain its presence in the ever-increasing competitive home entertainment market.

“With the extension of time at home, the scope of “entertainment” as a consumer is also expanding. Games are not a necessity of life. In order for users to choose games within a limited time, games must be fun. The competition is fierce, and I don’t think about it. Optimistic. I am also researching various forms of entertainment. In the future, in addition to developing long-term IPs such as “Mario” and “Zelda”, we will also focus on creating new game series.”

At the end of the interview, Furukawa reiterated that Nintendo has been considering new hardware. “We have been cultivating ideas for the new host that the market is looking forward to, but there are some things we can’t do now due to technology and cost constraints.” Earlier in an interview with the Nikkei Shimbun in February, Furukawa said that any successor to the Nintendo Switch must provide consumers with new forms of entertainment.

He said at the time: “The hardware and software development teams are in the same building, communicating closely and thinking about how to propose new forms of entertainment. In order to build hardware, we have to do a lot of preparation work years in advance, so we have been constantly In the end, the factor in commercializing a product is whether it can create a new experience.” The Switch was released in March 2017, and Nintendo hopes that this console will still be able to compete for another 4 years.
