Microsoft added a new hidden Workspaces feature to Edge Canary

The frequency of Microsoft’s Chromium-based Edge browser getting new features is quite high, and now, another useful feature may be about to appear. As Reddit user (and frequent discoverer of Edge’s new features) Leopeva64-2 shared, Microsoft has added a new hidden Workspaces feature to Edge Canary, which is the most active development branch of Edge Insiders.

Workspaces are located next to the tab bar at the top. They basically let the user rename a window and save all the tabs opened on it for later use. It may sound similar to Collections in concept, but Workspaces will open in its own separate window every time, so you can always have a specific window to focus on a task. The workspace will also persist in different browsing sessions. You can close the window and then reopen the workspace.

However, closing a tab in the workspace means that it is no longer part of the workspace. Any tabs you open will be added to the workspace and saved when you close it. Essentially, Collections allows you to easily access all content related to a specific topic at any time, while Workspaces focuses more on preserving your workflow. The current label and label group in the workspace will be saved, but the closed label will not.

Unlike most hidden Edge functions, this function does not exist as a Flag of a setting page, but as a startup parameter. If you want to try the workspace, you need to create a shortcut for Edge Canary with this parameter, and then edit the existing shortcut on the desktop by right-clicking the shortcut and selecting properties. And add the following parameters:

–enable-features=msWorkspaces

Then, at the end of the “Target” field, add the above text outside the quotation marks. You can also edit the link on the “Start” menu by right-clicking Edge Canary and selecting “Open File Location”. If you pin your browser to the taskbar, you may need to unpin it and pin it again to update it.
