35 organizations call on Zuckerberg to abandon the development of Instagram for children

An international coalition of 35 children’s and consumer organizations called on Instagram to abandon the development of an Instagram application for users under the age of 13. For years, lawmakers and parents have complained that Instagram is slow in identifying underage users, which is not conducive to protecting them from sex offenders and bullying. Now, Instagram is advancing the pace of developing an independent children’s version.

However, the aforementioned non-profit organization warned in a letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg that the development of a children’s version would not alleviate such problems. They said that children aged 10 to 12 who have an Instagram account are unlikely to switch to the “naive” version of Instagram and that the children’s version of the app will also immerse younger users in brushing photos and humiliate the body photos posted by others.
