Microsoft is gradually abandoning the integration of Paint 3D applications in Windows 10

Over the years, Microsoft has made several changes to Windows 10, including adding and removing various features. In the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, Microsoft introduced the 3D object folder and enabled the deep integration between the classic Paint and Paint 3D. For most users, Paint 3D applications and other 3D features are useless, but they cannot be completely removed from the operating system.

In File Explorer, 3D object folders are placed together with shortcuts to important folders such as the desktop, pictures, documents, etc., which always occupy visual space. Similarly, the context menu also has the option of “Edit with Paint 3D”, and most people may not use it. Uninstalling or disabling these features will not give people the option to opt-out of the forced integration of Paint 3D. Unless you are very familiar with the registry editor, there is no other way to reduce clutter.

With the release of the Windows 10 21H2 version, Microsoft seems to abandon Paint 3D application integration in the operating system. After the update, “Edit with Paint 3D” will be removed from the context menu and the classic Paint application.

Users who often use paint applications may know that the classic Paint (paint.exe) currently comes with the “Edit with Paint 3D” option, which allows you to open pictures in Paint 3D for additional customization. But in the new Paint application, Microsoft removed the “Edit with Paint 3D” option.

So far, even if you try to edit the registry manually, it is impossible to remove the Paint 3D option from the classic paint application. Using the registry editor, only the context menu items can be modified. This will change with the Windows 10 Sun Valley update because the Paint 3D entry in the Paint application will be deleted by Microsoft on all systems. The Paint 3D application can still be downloaded from the Microsoft Store. If you are interested in Paint 3D, you can still install it and continue to use it.
