When AirTags is in Lost Mode, all NFC-enabled devices (including devices running Android) can read the discovery information preset by the locator. And through this small but very important feature can help find lost items.
In the Spring Loaded activity early this morning, Apple did not mention the NFC feature too much. However, a new support document provides additional details about this feature. Apple said that when someone finds and clicks on the white part of the missing AirTags, they will connect it to an NFC-enabled device and be redirected to a web page that can display the victim’s phone number. In addition, this page will also provide other information such as the AirTags serial number.
AirTag users need to provide their contact information during the setup process and put the device in Lost Mode for this feature to work. Apple pointed out in its support document that Android devices can also interact with AirTags in lost mode. Apple wrote in the support document: “You can view the lost mode information on any NFC-enabled smartphone, such as an iPhone or Android phone.”

It should not be surprising that Apple included support for NFC (a widely adopted communication protocol) in this compact tracker. In addition to the Android system, many other common computing devices support NFC, which greatly increases the effectiveness of AirTag.
AirTag’s main communication method is an ultra-wideband radio deployed in Apple’s U1 chip, which sends pulses to other U1-equipped hardware such as the iPhone. The precise search feature of the tracker is driven by UWB and is currently unique to the iOS platform.
