Surface Laptop 4 begins to include AMD Ryzen in its secure core platform

With the introduction of Surface Laptop 4, Microsoft has expanded the number of certified configurations that can claim to carry its secure core platform. Although the industrial design of the Surface Laptop 4 has aged, it is still the most exquisite computing experience the company has proposed so far. In addition to GPU and battery improvements, Microsoft has also improved the security platform of Surface Laptop 4 to support AMD Ryzen processors.

As the core of Surface Laptop 4, the device uses Trusted Platform Module 2.0 (TPM) and AMD Ryzen mobile processor and system protection to start securely, and sandboxed firmware to protect key subsystems and sensitive data, and to prevent firmware vulnerabilities.

The impact is minimized. Kernel direct memory access protection has been pre-enabled on these devices, helping to ensure that the system is protected from malicious and unintended direct memory access (DMA) attacks from all DMA-capable devices (such as PCI devices), and thus thwarted Thunderspy. Wait for the entire category of driven DMA attacks.

TPM 2.0 is the hardware root of trust for Surface Laptop 4. Through hardware protection of sensitive assets such as BitLocker keys and security measurement of system status, TPM 2.0 helps prepare Surface Laptop 4 for zero-trust security.

Microsoft’s security core PC uses hardware-based security to boot the system into a “trusted state” to reduce the number of potential firmware vulnerabilities, while also protecting user identities through an isolated VBS.

Companies such as Acer, Asus, Dell, Dynabook, Hewlett-Packard and Lenovo have cooperated with Microsoft to provide hardware and firmware securities to enterprises through its secure core platform. Now the company is adding AMD’s Ryzen mobile processor to it through the Surface Laptop 4.
