Required Condition:
- The following devices are required to unlock iPhone via Apple Watch:
- iPhone with Face ID (iPhone X or later) and iOS 14.5 or later
- Apple Watch Series 3 or newer with watchOS 7.4 or higher
- To use this feature, you also need to meet the following requirements:
- Your Apple Watch needs to be paired with your iPhone.
- Your iPhone and Apple Watch need to turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
- Your Apple Watch needs to have a password, and “wrist detection” must be turned on.
- Your Apple Watch needs to be worn on your wrist and unlocked.
- You need to wear a mask that can cover your nose and mouth.
How to set up Unlock with Apple Watch:
- Open the “Settings” app on your iPhone.
- Tap “Face ID and Password” and enter your password.
- Scroll down to “Unlock with Apple Watch” and turn on the feature next to the watch name. If wrist detection is not enabled on your watch, you will be asked to turn on this feature.
How to unlock iPhone via Apple Watch:
- Make sure you are wearing a mask and your Apple Watch is on your wrist and unlocked.
- Wake up the iPhone by lifting the iPhone or tapping the screen.
- Take a look at your iPhone to unlock the device. Then, swipe up from the bottom of the iPhone screen to start using it.
If you didn’t intend to unlock the iPhone:
- When Apple Watch successfully unlocks your iPhone, the watch will provide tactile feedback and display a reminder. If you didn’t intend to unlock your iPhone, tap the “Lock iPhone” button on the Apple Watch screen.
- After you tap this button, the next time you unlock your iPhone, the iPhone will ask you to enter the passcode.

- The “Unlock with Apple Watch” function is only useful when the Apple Watch is worn on your wrist and unlocked, and your iPhone is nearby. This feature does not use Face ID to identify and authenticate your identity.
- The “Unlock with Apple Watch” function can only be used to unlock your iPhone. It will not verify your identity to use Apple Pay, passwords stored in the keychain, or password-protected apps. When wearing a mask, you can still use these functions by entering the iPhone passcode or using Apple Pay via Apple Watch.
