Google launched April 2021 update to its Chromecast

For the Chromecast with Google TV released last year, Google today launched an April update. This update has a capacity of 166MB, which is a considerable update for a streaming media device, and many improvements have been introduced.

After installing the update and restarting Chromecast, you can see that the video settings provide more options here. In the new “Advanced Video Control” settings area, you can now choose your favorite dynamic range format. Options include Dolby Vision, HDR, and even SDR. You can also manually switch to various refresh rates from this menu, including:

  • 4K (60Hz/50Hz/30Hz/25Hz/24Hz/smpte)
  • 1080p (60Hz/50Hz/24Hz)
  • 720p (60Hz / 50Hz)
  • 1080i (60Hz / 50Hz)
  • 576p (50Hz)
  • 480p (60Hz)

Google said that this update also improves the Wi-Fi performance of Chromecast and Google TV on 5GHz networks and mesh systems. More update details include:

  • Advanced video control settings for detailed HDR format, resolution/refresh rate and color format.
  • The improvement of HDMI hot plugging helps your Chromecast to detect the best TV settings.
  • Wi-Fi improvements for 5Ghz and mesh networks.
  • Improved Bluetooth audio lag in some applications.
  • HDMI-CEC can now be configured in the settings to only turn on/off the TV.
  • Security update: Android security patch level until April 2021.
