Microsoft Edge adds OS authentication security layer with password auto-fill feature

Right now, unauthorized users can log in to the website by using a password stored on Edge. To prevent this, Microsoft added another layer of security to Edge, which requires the user to enter the operating system password. When you visit a website and enter your login credentials, Edge will automatically fill them in when you next visit.

The password saved in Edge can be found at edge://settings/passwords.

However, if you are using a shared device, Microsoft Edge has added an optional setting that requires a computer password so that Edge can automatically fill in the password on the website. This optional setting is available on the password management page of Edge Canary and Dev.

Here is how you can enable and try it out

  • Launch Edge browser
  • Click “Settings and more”
  • Choose settings
  • Access configuration file>password>select “authentication required”

Set the settings that Edge needs to verify. According to convenience, select the time when you should be prompted to enter the Windows password from always, every minute and every session. Later, Edge will ask to prove your identity, and you can update the autofill settings after entering the operating system credentials.

Later, when Edge tries to fill in the password on the website, it will prompt for the password to confirm that you are using Edge on your own device or logged in. Of course, if you are the only person using your device, you may find this extra privacy measure useless.
