The latest data from research firm Canalys pointed out that the performance of the personal computer industry will continue to grow in 2020/21, as the pandemic forces many people to rethink the way they work – and where they work. PC shipments have grown for four consecutive quarters. Overall, these numbers (tablet PCs are included) increased by 53% year-on-year. The data shows that Chromebook is the main force of growth.
In the first quarter, products in this category increased 275% year-on-year to 12 million units. HP occupies a considerable share of it, accounting for 36.4% of the total market, higher than the 18.6% share. Lenovo, Acer, Samsung and Dell ranked in the top five.
Growth in this category continues to be mainly driven by the education sector. For a long time, Chromebooks have been the main foothold for devices that have traditionally failed to break through the mainstream market. As many classrooms are forced to go virtual, this category continues to see impressive growth, and this may now extend beyond education.
