Edge 92 opens up Windows Hello authentication with saved passwords

Microsoft is developing two new features for the Chromium Edge browser, namely Automatic HTTPS and Saved Password Windows Hello authentication. Currently, users are automatically redirected to the insecure HTTP version when they enter a URL in the address bar. However, when Automatic HTTPS is enabled, Edge will first try to connect to an available HTTPS secure connection.

Regarding the details of Automatic HTTPS, we have mentioned in the report reprinted by Techdows yesterday. Friends in need, you can choose to switch automatically under Settings -> Privacy, Search and Services (it is recommended to use this default), or always force it (or encounter errors more frequently). But what interests us more is the integration of Windows Hello authentication in Microsoft Edge.

For users who frequently log in to websites such as Twitter or Reddit, Microsoft’s own password manager can bring some convenience to their surfing life. Like Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge can also access and automatically fill in passwords synchronized with Microsoft accounts, or manage and edit saved passwords through the browser’s settings page.

However, in order to further improve user security and privacy, Microsoft has recently begun testing the integrated support for Windows Hello authentication in the Edge Dev/Canary early adopters channel.

Interested friends can move to Edge Dev or Edge Canary, go to Settings -> Personal Information -> Password, and then enable Required Authentication authorization. Later, when you need to try to log in with the saved password, the system will automatically call the Windows Hello authentication function. As you can see from the screenshot, there are currently three modes to choose from, namely (1) Always use, (2) Every 1 minute, and (3) Every thread session.

More importantly, Windows Hello does not always require special hardware. In addition to infrared cameras, you can use methods such as PIN, fingerprint, or iris scanning to verify Edge’s password manager. Finally, in the next major update, Microsoft Edge also plans to introduce integrated support for features such as Office viewer and Windows search.
