Wal-Mart’s secret cloud gaming project leaked

While the Epic Games vs Apple App Store monopoly case was fought, the outside world also learned about the confidential emails exchanged between Walmart and Epic. TechSpot pointed out that the retail giant intends to launch a cloud gaming service called Project Storm, and is expected to introduce Fortress Night to this new platform that has not yet been officially released. In addition, the email also described how this cloud game service works and shared a preview of the Home menu UI.

In fact, as early as 2019, there were rumors that Wal-Mart planned to launch a cloud gaming service (just a few days after the official announcement of Google Stadia), and the result has been silent until now. Interestingly, in the Epic v. Apple case, we actually saw Project Storm again. This part of the information comes from an email exchange between Epic and Wal-Mart, which includes a presentation introducing the so-called Project Storm platform.

In a How We Build PPT, Walmart announced that it plans to support a variety of third-party launchers, including Uplay, Origin, Steam, Battle.net, Epic Games Store, and Bethesda Launcher. In another PPT, we also saw the main menu interface of the Project Stormcloud game service. It can be seen that the UI contains a list of My Games and Recently Played games, and players can select or retrieve by type game.

The Project Storm project was exposed because Wal-Mart described the platform as an open ecosystem, allowing players to download games or stream through the cloud to experience on the device. This is exactly what Epic wants to mock Apple’s ecosystem is too closed and too closed.

Mark Rein, the co-founder of Epic Games, wrote in an email in April 2019: “I used the Android smartphone + Xbox controller for the experience. I feel that the experience of Project Storm is similar to that of PS4, and is better than that of Android or iOS. Play the game on.”

In addition, during the trial of the case, a group photo of Mark Rein and other members of the Epic Games executive team was exposed, as well as a back clip device that can fix the mobile phone and the handle together. Interested consumers can buy it at Walmart for $2.

It is said that Project Store planned to open the Beta experience in 2019, but the service failed to advance smoothly in the end. Even with reports that Wal-Mart has won some partners, the project was shelved when the COVID-19 pandemic began last year.
