India suspends approval to import Chinese-made WiFi equipment, Lenovo, OPPO and other companies are affected

Two industry insiders stated that India has suspended approval of the import of WiFi modules from China for several months, causing US PC manufacturers Dell, Hewlett-Packard and Chinese companies Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo and Lenovo to postpone the launch of products in this key growth market.

According to sources, India has postponed the import of finished electronic devices from China that include WiFi modules, such as Bluetooth speakers, wireless headsets, smartphones, smartwatches and laptops. Since at least last November, the Wireless Planning and Coordination Department (WPC) under the Ministry of Communications of India has suspended approval of the import of these devices.

The source understands the lobbying efforts of companies seeking customs clearance. Since then, more than 80 such applications from US, Chinese and Korean companies have been waiting for WPC approval. Even some Indian companies are waiting for WPC’s approval to import some finished products from China.

Dell, HP, Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo and Lenovo have not yet commented. The Ministry of Communications of India has not yet commented. Two sources said that the government still needs to respond to the statements made by industry lobby groups and individual companies.
