Microsoft released Windows 10 Build 21376 internal beta update

Windows 10

Windows 10

Earlier this year, Microsoft unexpectedly confirmed that it was making UI improvements for Windows 10 and found related inactive code in the preview version. Microsoft today announced the release of Windows 10 Build 21376 to internal beta users in the development channel. This version comes with updated Segoe UI fonts and more.

In the most recent preview version, there are two major changes. For one, the rounded corners are now more obvious. Microsoft has also introduced new icons, almost everywhere, extending to settings applications, control panels, file explorers and various application windows.

Like most Windows 10 preview versions, there are no major changes in this week’s update. The overall layout of the operating system is roughly the same since the last major feature update (creative update). However, Microsoft has updated some basic UI elements to make the interface look more modern.

As you may know, the default system font of Windows 10 is “Segoe UI”, which is used in all applications, such as controlling browsers, resource managers, settings, etc. Microsoft is updating the default Segoe UI to include a “light axis”, which should allow fonts to scale seamlessly on devices of various shapes. For example, Microsoft seems to have improved the readability of small font sizes, and outlines look better on different display sizes.

By default, the Segoe UI of Windows 10 is designed to have a font size of 9pt. Font expression is limited at large sizes and currently lacks readability at sizes smaller than 9pt. In the next version, Microsoft’s Segoe UI font user interface will dynamically adjust in all your applications and devices, and provide good readability in different sizes, including fonts smaller than 9pt. The style and silhouette will also become better in large sizes. These changes will be obvious in settings and other Windows applications.

As you can see in the screenshot above, the “Settings” text on the app title bar does look cleaner than the existing font on the right. It is worth noting that Microsoft is slowly moving to the new Segoe UI font. At present, when you look closely at the title bar of UWP applications, the new font is very obvious.
