Recently, Twitter has been trying some features, including providing tip cans for specific groups of people, supporting large height images on mobile devices, and providing Twitter Spaces for some users. As early as January of this year, we learned that Twitter is developing a proprietary font called “Chirp”, and now it seems that the company has begun to introduce this new font to desktop users.
Chirp is a mixture of American Gothic and European grotesque and is part of Twitter’s redesign and branding efforts announced in January. Although the new font appears to have been rolled out a few hours ago, there have been no updated blog posts detailing this change so far. A few months ago, Twitter said when describing Chirp.
We developed Chirp in collaboration with @grillitype in Switzerland, which is our first proprietary font ever. Chirp strikes a balance between messy and sharp to amplify the fun and unruly of Twitter, but can also carry serious content when necessary. In order to achieve this goal, we mixed American Gothic and European grotesque styles and added the specific hand-made habit of early woodcut specimens. This gives us a changeable and modern family with an international feel. We are expanding Chirp to languages other than the Latin alphabet.

Although there is no official news about the launch, it seems to be developed by mistake. Some users received the new fonts, while others did not. If you click “View Page Source” on Twitter in your browser, you will find some seemingly relevant HTML tags, such as the screenshot below. For users with new fonts, these tags are set to True.
To say the least, the reactions of Twitter users who noticed this change seem to be mixed. Although some people say they like it, most people’s reviews are very negative. But having said that, this type of reaction is very common when people are asked to adapt to change. It is not clear when we will learn more about the promotion plan of the new Twitter font.
