Ubisoft wants to develop free games for all 3A series

On Ubisoft’s fiscal 2021 fiscal conference call, Ubisoft’s CFO Frédérick Duguet stated that they would “change” the previous strategy of releasing 3-4 3A games each year. This is not to say that Ubisoft will develop fewer 3A in the future, but that it will develop more high-quality free games in the future, making free games the main source of revenue. Interestingly, Ubisoft wants to develop free games for each series.

Ubisoft sees free-to-play games as an opportunity to greatly expand the player base of their largest series. Duguet said: “We think it’s time to launch high-quality free games on all the biggest series and platforms.”

Coincidentally, EA and Ubisoft both released financial reports today. According to EA’s financial report, only 26% of EA’s revenue comes from traditional paid game sales. The bulk of revenue comes from game instant services, DLC, mobile games, and micro-transactions.

There are already a large number of free games that “trend to 3A”, including “Fortnite”,Call of Duty: War Zone“, “Apex Legends” and so on. Ubisoft has previously launched a free battle royale game “Super Hunting City”, but unfortunately it did not succeed. They recently announced a free game called The Division: Heartland. Maybe it won’t take long for us to see a free Assassin’s Creed or a free Far Cry game.
