Intel technology makes GTA V look more realistic

As a long-lasting game under R Star, many players are still immersed in the world of GTA 5. However, a new device learning project from Intel Labs has surprisingly given San Andreas a more realistic picture experience. Many scenes in San Andreas can be found in Los Angeles and Southern California in reality. And Intel’s “photo fidelity enhancement” technology has opened the door to a new world for us.

With the efforts of several researchers, Stephan R. Richter, Hassan Abu Alhaija and Vladlen Kolten, we have a taste of San Andreas with a “renewed look”. It is reported that Intel researchers used some real neural network data sets here, which will be used to reconstruct San Andreas. Interested friends can read their papers ( PDF ). From the demonstration video, we can observe the city through some dirty windshields, such as some dim lights, smoother sidewalks, and incredible reflections from the body.

The Cityscapes dataset used in the project mainly borrows photos of German streets and uses them to fill in the city details in GTA 5. Even better, the actual experience is quite smooth, similar to how we scroll to view Google Street View in a browser.

Of course, this achievement is also inseparable from the geometric information of GTA 5 itself, which surpasses the functions provided by other real sense conversion processes. Researchers call it “G-buffers”, which contains data such as the distance between the objects in the picture and the main viewing angle, texture quality, and car gloss.

Although it is unlikely that R Star will soon launch an enhanced version of the GTA 5 game experience using this research, with the blessing of neural networks and device learning technology, we are expected to make more low-resolution games or film and television content in the future. Better restore missing pixel details.
