Xiaomi obtains a patent for extendable rotating camera

After the built-in flip-flop hidden camera patent, Dutch technology blog LetsGoDigital discovered another retractable flip camera patent filed by Xiaomi. On November 30, 2020, Xiaomi submitted a patent for a smartphone with a retractable flip camera to the State Intellectual Property Office, and officially announced it to the outside world on May 14, 2021. If you remember Samsung’s Galaxy A80, you should not be unfamiliar with this new patent from Xiaomi.

The description in the document is very brief, but we can clearly understand Xiaomi’s flip camera design concept through 16 illustrations. At first glance, its appearance is not much different from ordinary full-screen smartphones, except that there are no bangs or proactive punches at the top of the screen. Before revealing the retractable flip camera, you might think that it uses a hidden camera solution under the screen, but Xiaomi obviously has other ideas.

In the rear camera mode, the camera can use the centered large main camera to shoot (or use the same 108MP sensor as the Xiaomi 11), and two other components are placed symmetrically next to it.

But when the user wants to use the front camera, the camera module will automatically flip on the back cover, which is very similar to Samsung’s Galaxy A80 launched in 2019, but different from Asus’s new ZenFone 8 Flip device.

In the illustration, you can also see the slender button on the left side of the fuselage (or for volume adjustment), and there are two other buttons on the right side (or the power/photograph button). As for when this concept device will be released, it is currently unknown.
