Google launched Smart Canvas and improved meetings and workspaces

Building on Docs, Sheets and Slides, Google today announced Smart canvas. Smart canvas is a more interactive and integrated tool that brings together existing Workspace tools.

Google Smart canvas

With Smart canvas, Google wants to make Documents, Sheets and Slides in Google Workspace even more flexible, interactive and intelligent. The search giant will introduce new features between now and the end of the year that will make it easier for Google Workspace users to collaborate with teammates.

One of those new features is mentions. When you mention a person in a document, additional information such as the person’s location, job title and contact details is automatically displayed. Google calls them smart chips, and they can already be used in Docs for recommended files and for meetings.

Smart Chips

To insert smart chips anywhere, just type “@” to see a list of recommended people, files, and meetings. From the web or mobile, collaborators can quickly browse linked meetings and people or view linked documents, all without changing tabs or contexts. The smart chips will also be coming to Spreadsheets in the coming months.

More Possibilities

Google also announced linked (with tasks) checklists, pageless sizes (that override boundary), writing assistance with inclusive language recommendations, emoji responses in Docs, and the ability to present via Google Meet. Google will integrate its Meet video conferencing service into Docs, Sheets and Slides. In this way, more efficient communication can be done via a window in the apps with a video call.
