Android 12 is finally going to fix Google Photos screenshot problem

DCIM stands for ‘digital camera images’ and can be seen as the standard folder in which the smartphone camera automatically stores photos. A number of phones also use this folder to store screenshots and Android 12 is now going to sort things out here.

DCIM and Pictures

By default, Android has two folders where photos and videos are stored, DCIM and Pictures. In Pictures, you will find files that you have made with apps such as Twitter or Reddit. You will also find a subfolder Screenshots here where you can find the screenshots. The DCIM folder contains all the photos and videos you have taken with your phone. Then apps like Google Photos, Dropbox and OneDrive scan the DCIM folder for new files which they then sync in the cloud.

Screenshots in DCIM

Now it is the case that some smartphones in the folder DCIM also keep screenshots. Examples are Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO and Realme phones. That means, if you have cloud sync on, the screenshots will also be uploaded to Google Photos, Dropbox and OneDrive. So you will have to delete the screenshots in two places each time, and that is an annoying job.

Fortunately, Google is going to fix this problem, according to Android 12 developer documentation, XDA says. This document would force Samsung to save screenshots in the Pictures folder, thus avoiding unnecessary synchronization of files in the cloud. Unfortunately, this documentation is not yet final, Google may decide to change something about it. We hope that Google does not, and finalizes the document with the stable version of Android 12.

Starting June 1, Google will no longer offer free and unlimited backups in Google Photos. So you still have a week to delete all your screenshots. Editor Sebastien gives you a number of tips about this.
