There is a feature to translate the user interface hidden in Android 12

A few days ago, Google announced Android 12 in its I/O 2021 keynote, and in the process confirmed most of the rumors we have seen recently. The new mobile operating system has received a massive redesign, called Material You, which will allow users to easily customize their phones and tablets without worrying about installing any themes.

Android 12 also provides a large number of additional features on the basis of major design changes, including improved privacy protection and better interaction with other devices. But Google has not revealed all the secrets of Android 12, because the length of time for its I/O keynote to discuss the new mobile operating system is limited.

In addition to the features that can be used by all Android phones and tablets that meet the requirements of the Android 12 update, Google is likely to develop some unique features of Pixel phones in the operating system. One of these features may make it easier for Google to sell Pixel in other markets.

Automatic Translation of The Application

The Chrome browser already has a built-in translation feature that allows you to translate any website into the language of your choice. On PCs and mobile devices, this is a good accessibility feature because it opens the web to more users, whether they speak a foreign language or not.

For Pixel phones, applying the same automatic translation feature will change the rules of the game, allowing users to install and use applications that have not been localized for their region. This will make Pixel more attractive and easier to sell in some markets, while the Play Store will be easier to use in international markets.

Developers can gain more international users even if they don’t translate their applications themselves. Google did not elaborate on any project involving the translation of the user interface of Android 12 system applications, but XDA found evidence that Google is taking this special initiative.

The code discovered in April indicates that Google has a new framework for translating the user interface elements of the application into the user’s native language. After I/O, Google updated its API improvement list, adding a new android.view.translation package, and related methods in the View class.

These APIs are not documented, but a developer believes that Google may indeed be studying the translation of user-visible strings provided by the system. A different developer pointed out that the application UI translation feature is not meant to be a standard Android 12 function, because the code is specifically tied to Pixel phones.

The report pointed out that the new translation feature should be found in the device personalization service application, although the current version does not have this function. If it appears in the future Android 12 beta, users will be able to test the UI translation feature on devices that can run the beta. This also means that this feature will not be limited to Pixel phones, at least not initially.

Although this new accessibility feature sounds amazing, there is an obvious problem: it has to do with Google’s ability to automatically translate foreign languages in Chrome. The resulting translation results are not always good, so compared to manual translation, this may affect usability.

Although this is not a big problem for the website, it may be problematic for the user interface translation of the application. As with unproven Android features, it is currently unknown whether or when Google will extend this application’s user interface automatic translation feature to Pixel phones and possibly other devices.
