Hide Your Online Status
Instagram offers a feature where you can immediately see who is online at the moment. If a person is not, you will see when that was last. Handy perhaps, but the same information from you is also available. Don’t want others to see if you’re online or when you’ve been?
Instagram calls this activity status and it is easy to disable. By the way, you will no longer be able to see the online activity of others. Use the steps below to turn this status off, or turn it back on if you want.
- Tap your profile picture at the bottom right;
- Tap the three horizontal bars at the top right;
- At the bottom of the screen, choose ‘settings’;
- Tap ‘Privacy’ and choose ‘Activity status’;
- Turn off the switch there.
Change Your Ad Type Preference
Instagram also has to make money, of course, and that’s why you can’t avoid ads. If you have not set anything up for this, you will see advertisements on all kinds of topics. However, it is possible to indicate a preference for this. That does not mean that you no longer see advertisements, but they do suit you just a little more.
- At the bottom right, tap the avatar;

- Choose ‘Ad Topics’.
- Check and uncheck what type of ads you want to see.
Set The Correct Theme
It is also possible to select a theme in the Instagram app. However, don’t expect to be able to pick a pink, green or blue theme. You do have a choice of a dark or light theme, or you can let the app follow the default settings of the device.
To set the correct theme, follow the steps below:
- Tap your profile picture at the bottom right;
- At the top right, tap the three lines;
- At the bottom you choose ‘Settings’;
- Tap on ‘Theme’;
- Make the choice you want.
Limit Your Instagram Time
Do you notice that you are scrolling around too much on Instagram and do you want to limit yourself to that? Then simply set a timer. This indicates the maximum amount of time you can spend per day. When that is over, you will receive a notification, so that you really have to put your device away.
- At the bottom right, tap the avatar;
- At the top right, tap the three horizontal lines;
- At the bottom you choose ‘Settings’;
- Choose ‘Account’;
- Tap “Your Activity”
- Choose the second tab ‘Time’;
- Scroll to ‘Set daily reminder’ and follow the steps.

On Instagram, you can not only upload photos or videos but also leave comments, post comments or provide your profile with updates. Extra Security: Set Up Two-Step Verification
Logging in to Instagram is not too difficult by default, but therefore not very secure. Just enter your account name and password and you’re done. Do you manage a popular account with thousands of followers or do you think extra security is important? Then put an extra layer of security over the app using two-step verification. You can set that extra security via these steps:
- Tap your profile picture at the bottom right;
- At the top right you see three horizontal lines, tap on that;
- At the bottom appears ‘Settings’, which you tap;
- Choose ‘Security’;
- Tap ‘Two-step verification’ and follow the further steps.
If you log in on a new device, the login details will not be sufficient. You have to enter an extra code. You can receive this via a text message or via a so-called verification app such as Google Authenticator or Authy. That is a good general tip anyway because you can also use such apps for logging in to other apps or websites.
Switch Quickly Between Profiles
For example, if you use Instagram for private and work purposes, you will regularly have to switch between your profiles. Many people certainly do this quite laboriously, but it can be done much faster. Simply click twice on the profile picture at the bottom right and you will switch to the last opened account.
