Chrome’s enhanced security attributes make it easier to spot suspicious downloads and extensions

Google is introducing new security features for the Chrome browser to make it easier to detect suspicious downloads and extensions. This new feature builds on the enhanced Safe Browsing feature introduced last year and is mainly for Chrome extensions. If the user chooses to install an extension that is not considered trusted, the browser will issue a warning.

In order to gain trust, extensions need to come from developers who follow Google’s developer program policies and have been there for at least a few months. This means that brand new developers will not be immediately considered credible by Google.

When trying to download an untrusted extension, Chrome will display a pop-up warning and you should proceed with caution. However, you can still choose to “continue to install” the extension. Google said that according to its standards, nearly three-quarters of the extensions in the Chrome browser store will be considered trusted. Not being trusted does not mean that Google considers an extension to be dangerous, but its developer may be a new member of the store or may have committed a minor policy violation recently.

Chrome browser has also received a new scanning feature for scanning download files that look suspicious. In the future, any download that appears risky but not obviously unsafe will provide an option to upload it to Google’s servers for a more thorough scan. You can bypass this process if you want, but it provides an extra layer of protection when downloading files from the Internet. The new scanning options are provided in addition to the existing metadata checks that Chrome has already performed on downloads.
