Germany launches antitrust investigation into Google News Service ‘News Showcase’

According to reports, the German antitrust agency said today that it has launched an investigation into the Google News service ‘News Showcase‘. News Showcase is a news display platform launched by Google in October last year.

It consists of many articles. Publishers are responsible for packaging news on specific topics, providing in-depth news analysis, news timeline, or related articles, and will also embed elements such as video, audio, and daily presentations in the future.

GoogleNews Showcase has signed cooperation agreements with nearly 200 publishers around the world, covering Germany, Brazil, Argentina, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia. The German regulator said today that cooperation with Google may attract publishers and other news providers and provide consumers with better information services.

However, it must be ensured that the process does not discriminate against individual publishers. Google’s strong position in reaching end customers cannot force other news publishers or providers to withdraw from the competition.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai said last year that he plans to invest 1 billion US dollars in 3 years to promote the development of Google News Showcase, and will continue to expand the plan afterward.
