Google starts rollout Locked Folder feature for Google Photos

Google announced a number of privacy features at I/O 2021 that should make it safer to use Google services, including the Locked Folder for Google Photos. This map is now being rolled out by Google.

Secure Folder in Google Photos

Google Photos is getting a new Locked Folder feature. In this folder, which we also know from other smartphones such as Samsung, you can store personal or sensitive images. Think of pictures of bills or ideas for gifts to buy for your girlfriend. You can only open the folder with a password, PIN code or via the fingerprint scanner. This way no one can access the files.

Photos or videos stored in this folder will not appear in the photo grid or in Google Photos search, albums, and memories. They are also not available for third-party apps. One drawback of using the secure folder is that you cannot back up the hidden photos to the cloud. If the photos/videos are already backed up, Google will remove them from the cloud and will only be found locally in the Locked Folder.

Pixel owners can also set the Google Camera app to save new photos or videos directly to the locked folder. To do this, open the Google Camera app, tap the gallery icon in the top right corner, and select Locked Folder from the list.

Availability

Last week it was announced that the new Google Photos feature is part of the latest Pixel Feature Drops and that it was on its way to the first Pixel smartphones. Currently, the first Pixel 3, Pixel 4 and Pixel 5 phones will feature the Locked Folder in Google Photos, XDA reports.

If you are in the first batch, you can find the function under Library > Tools > Locked folder. At the time of writing, the map is not yet available on the Pixel phones in the editorial office. Google has promised that the Google Photos Locked Folder will be extended to other Android phones in the course of 2021.
