UPC under-screen camera is also suitable for Galaxy Z Slide or Galaxy Z Roll

LetsGoDigital pointed out: In addition to Galaxy Z Fold 3/Galaxy Z Flip 3, Samsung seems to be brewing to introduce UPC under-screen hidden cameras for more forms of mobile devices. In November 2020, Samsung filed a patent application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), which depicts a mobile device with a sliding/scrolling screen design, which coincides with the previously registered trademarks of Galaxy Z Slide and Galaxy Z Roll.

On June 17, 2021, related patents were officially included in the database of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). But in fact, at the previous SID 2021 display technology exhibition, we have already seen a similar sliding concept that Samsung has shown, supplemented by the camera and other advanced feature improvements.

This 45-page document describes a high-end Galaxy smartphone equipped with a rolling screen. In the storage state, it has a compact appearance and screen size similar to ordinary smartphones, but users can also stretch out a larger display area on the right side as needed (for example, an increase of 30%).

In fact, as early as 2020, during the OPPO X 2021 event, we have seen the concept retractable screen smartphone that the company has shown. Samsung’s screen is similar to LG Rollable. Interestingly, the patent document also mentions a hidden camera under the screen. However, the Galaxy Z Fold 3, which is rumored to be released in August, will be the first to use the UPC proactive solution.

In addition to the UPC front camera, Samsung has also placed a light and proximity sensor (located in the upper left corner of the screen) under the flexible screen of the Galaxy Z Roll, and can also add ToF and under-screen fingerprint sensors as needed. Turning to the back, you will see a vertically arranged rear module (three cameras + flash), and an unexpected heart rate (HRM) sensor.

Although the Galaxy S10 was also equipped with an HRM sensor, Samsung did not use it on the Galaxy S20/S21 series. Obviously, this function is still used on the Galaxy Watch smartwatch, it will be more practical.

In addition, there are no physical buttons on the side of the device, and there are microphone + dual speaker openings at the bottom and a USB-C charging/data port at the corner. As shown in the animation above, after the device is stretched out, you will also see the speaker opening at the bottom of the other half.

As for when Samsung plans to launch the Galaxy Z Roll smartphone designed in this way, it is speculated that it may be the first half of 2022. Before that, let’s pay attention to what surprises the Galaxy Z Fold 3/Galaxy Z Flip 3 will bring in August!
