Samsung showcases a new smart watch system based on Google Wear

Samsung has already demonstrated its new unified smartwatch platform with Google at MWC 2021, but the company has not announced the new Galaxy Watch today, or even what the new platform will be called (it is informally called Wear); these The content will be announced at the Galaxy Unpacked event later this summer.

However, Samsung showed off the appearance of its One UI watch software at MWC and detailed what the new Google/Samsung partnership might mean for future Galaxy watches.

To be clear: Samsung’s One UI Watch will not look like all smartwatches built on the new Google/Samsung unified platform. It is a special case for Samsung devices. This is similar to the Samsung Smart One UI phone function. The goal is to achieve a consistent look and experience across all Samsung hardware and software, and so far, it looks very good.

The settings menu has been redesigned to look more like the phone’s menu, and some things are synced from the phone: if additional time zones are set in the clock app, they will appear on the watch, as will blocked calls on the phone Blocked by the watch. Samsung also showed off a new watch interface design tool, which will be provided to Android developers later this year to easily create a new watch interface for the platform.

It is unclear whether the current Tizen or Wear OS watch surface can be used with the new operating system or One UI watch, but the current options are also severely lacking, so any new options are welcome.

Most importantly, similar to the Apple Watch, when you install an application compatible with a smartwatch on your phone, the corresponding watch application will also be automatically installed on the watch. You don’t need to manually install anything like you currently do on Tizen-based watches, nor do you need to deal with the weird wrist app store, just download an app to your phone, and it should also appear directly on your wrist.

The new One UI watch experience is expected to appear on Samsung wearables for the first time at the Samsung Unpacked event later this year. Considering other recent Samsung hardware rumors, it sounds like Unpacked should be a big event this time.
