WhatsApp appoints former Amazon executives to lead Indian payments business

It was reported that Facebook’s messaging app announced today that it has appointed Manesh Mahatme, a former Amazon executive, as its head of India’s payment business. Based on the number of users, India is the largest market for WhatsApp.

With the appointment of Mahatme as the head of India’s payment business, WhatsApp hopes to further strengthen its Indian business. WhatsApp said in a statement that Mahatme will help improve the user’s payment experience and promote business growth.

At Amazon, Mahatme led the product and engineering team of Amazon Pay in India. Prior to this, Mahatme also worked at Citigroup and Indian mobile operator Bharti Airtel. WhatsApp has more than 500 million users in India and was approved to launch a payment service in India last year.

WhatsApp is ambitious. Last year, it invested US$5.7 billion in Jio Platforms, the digital arm of Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, giving WhatsApp the opportunity to provide payment services to millions of small retail stores.

WhatsApp India director Abhijit Bose also said last year that the company also plans to expand partnerships with banks to provide financial services such as pensions and insurance.
