Google’s new website and resources help Americans find free food during the pandemic

In an announcement, Google explained how the COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to the deteriorating food crisis in the United States, which resulted in approximately 45 million people or 1 in 7 Americans experiencing food at some point in 2020 Not safe. The company pointed out that this number has increased by 30% over 2019. Of these 45 million people, 15 million are children.

Although the impact of the pandemic has subsided with the reopening of businesses and the resumption of personal activities, many children still go hungry during the summer when the school lunch program is unavailable.

To help address this and other needs related to food insecurity, Google’s new website (website: g.co/findfoodsupport) provides food support resources, YouTube videos about food insecurity in the United States, and Google Maps positioning tools. The tool will guide people to a food bank or other food support location near them.

Google said it worked with organizations including No Kid Hungry, FoodFinder, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to capture 90,000 places that provide free food support in 50 U.S. states. Using this online tool, website visitors can enter their location and view school meal plan pickup points, food banks, and food pantries in their area.

The tool will show the address, phone number and other details of the place where the food is provided, such as the day or hours it is open. The new website also highlights other food support information, including SNAP benefits information; support for specific groups, such as seniors, children, and families; state welfare guidelines; and food support hotlines. For those who are not facing food support issues, it provides information on how to donate money, time or food to those in need.
