This is the new TV app video player in tvOS 15

tvOS 15 includes a new video player. This makes it easier to adjust the subtitles, language and volume. We show you what it looks like!

Video player in tvOS 15 TV app with less distraction

When you watch a movie or series and you want to adjust the subtitles, that causes quite a bit of distraction in tvOS 14 and older. You have to swipe down on your Siri Remote, which instantly makes a large portion of your video invisible. From tvOS 15, Apple improves on this, although unfortunately only in its own TV app and the Computers app. It is still unclear whether the changes can also be used by other apps.

If you watch a series on Apple TV+ or a purchased movie from the iTunes Store, you will now see the title and all control buttons at the bottom of your screen, just above the progress bar. On the right, you will find three buttons: Subtitles, Audio and Picture-in-Picture. The fact that you can adjust and set up these parts is not new, but when you do this in tvOS 15, you can continue to look further during the set-up. This is especially useful for others you watch together.

Apple already added extra functions to the video player when the new Siri Remote 2 was introduced. For example, you can now accurately fast forward and rewind in apps that use the built-in video player. At the moment, third-party apps do not yet support the new buttons as shown in the image above. It is hoped that Apple has made it possible for developers to implement this with an update.

Basic settings now with standard ’tile’ design

The new buttons are very similar to Apple’s newer design language. As far as we’re concerned, the old appearance was somewhat different from other Apple designs. In tvOS 15, only a small menu appears at the bottom right of your screen with all the options. It is similar to a selection list on other devices. Apple has standardized the design of such ’tiles’ and tvOS 15 is reaping the benefits.

In the new view, there is no longer a function in swiping down on your Siri Remote. As far as we’re concerned, that’s a good thing, because for advanced settings it’s just better to go to the Settings app. When you watch a video, basic settings are sufficient.

We already talked about accurate fast forward and rewind with the Siri Remote 2. Curious how that works? Check out our special tip! We also provide a handy overview of known apps that support this feature.
