Those important features that disappeared from the Windows 11 taskbar

If you have been lucky enough to upgrade to Windows 11, you may find that some important taskbar functions have been lost after the experience. The new version of Windows 11 is based on modern WinUI, XAML and UWP components, provides a brand-new file manager, start menu, operation center experience, and introduces a major visual upgrade on the basis of improving security.

Can only be placed at the bottom of the screen

Although Windows 11 has significantly upgraded the interactive experience, some taskbar functions have been lost. In Windows 11, the taskbar is optimized based on UWP (XAML), but the default function of the taskbar in the current preview version is still very limited, and the arrangement cannot be changed.

The Windows 11 taskbar can only be restricted to the bottom of the display, which is officially confirmed in Microsoft’s documentation. In the Windows 10 system, users can adjust the position of the taskbar in the settings application, which can be adjusted to the four positions of the bottom, top left and right.

Do not allow dragging apps/shortcuts

Windows 11 also does not allow users to drag and drop applications/shortcuts onto the taskbar. In Windows 10 and earlier versions, you can drag and drop applications from the desktop or explorer to the taskbar, and Windows will automatically generate a shortcut.

But now, a new feature called Snap Groups has been added to the Windows taskbar, which allows you to easily switch back to the snapped window. This new multitasking experience is visible when you buckle two or more applications together and hover your mouse over the open application on the taskbar.

However, this feature is not currently accepted by all users. For some users who frequently switch applications, this is undoubtedly a very good feature, but some users hate this feature very much.

Ungrouping of taskbar icons is not allowed

According to Microsoft, after updating to Windows 11, some icons (depending on the application) may no longer appear in the system tray, and some applications can no longer customize the taskbar area.

Taskbar right-click menu

In the preview version, Microsoft is experimenting to move all taskbar right-click menu options to the settings application. This will further simplify the experience and reduce clutter, but for users who have not activated Windows, this may be a problem. In an inactive copy of Windows, it is not possible to access personalization options. On an inactive PC, you can still use the registry editor to customize Windows, although there is no guarantee that this will always exist.

Microsoft is listening to your feedback

Microsoft officials confirmed that they are listening to feedback from Windows Insiders. Therefore, some of these missing features are likely to be restored in the final version of the operating system, but there is no guarantee.

Windows 11 is currently in the final stages of development, and it will begin rolling out to eligible consumers later this year. For those devices that are not supported, Microsoft said it will continue to support the 21H2 version of Windows 10 and other updates, but the big changes will still be exclusive to the new operating system.
