Google responds to antitrust lawsuits – Make no mistake, we are more open than Apple

Wilson White, Google’s senior director of public policy, responded to antitrust lawsuits on the Google Play app store today. In his blog post, he stated that this lawsuit mistakes the facts and narrowly defines the application market as only Android devices. W don’t know that Google still faces fierce competition from Apple, but Android is more open but under attack.

On Wednesday, local time, the attorneys general of 36 U.S. states and Washington, D.C. filed an antitrust lawsuit against Google, accusing Google of abusing the power of the Google Play app store to collect a share from developers.

Here are the main points of White’s response: We developed the Android system to create more options for mobile technology. Today, anyone, including our competitors, can customize and develop Android devices for free.

We also developed Google Play, an app store, to help people download apps on their devices. If you can’t find the app you want to download in Google Play, you can download the app from a third-party app store or directly from the developer website. We did not impose restrictions like other mobile systems.

Therefore, it is strange that a group of state attorneys choose to file a lawsuit against a system that is more open and offers more options than other opponents. This case mimics a similar, unfounded lawsuit filed by large game developer Epic Games. Epic benefited from the openness of the Android system and was able to distribute the “Fortnite” application outside of Google Play (but filed a lawsuit against Google).

This lawsuit limits the definition of the application market to Android devices, completely ignoring competition from other platforms that the company faces, such as Apple’s extremely successful application store. Third-party companies predict that the Apple App Store accounts for the vast majority of mobile app store revenue. We have to compete for developers and customers, if we can not provide them with the best experience on Google Play, they have other alternatives.
