Boston police assisted car owners in recovering stolen bicycles using AirTag installed

Boston police recovered a man’s stolen bicycle by tracking the AirTag that the owner cleverly hid in his bicycle bag. On the evening of July 4, Gene Gorter’s bicycle was stolen at his door in Boston. The next day, he contacted the Boston Police Department and reported the theft. He also provided his AirTag information to the police.

The AirTag was hidden in a bag on his bicycle, not on the frame of the bicycle. From the beginning, we hoped that the thief would not be aware of the AirTag so that the police could track it. According to GadgetLite’s report, this is the case. The police can find the location of bicycles, bags, and AirTags through the iPhone. The bicycle was found near a trash can with bags and AirTags in it.

The police believed that the thief found nothing useful in the bag, so they simply threw it away. Fortunately, this means that they did not find AirTag either. Although this is certainly a good thing for Gorter, it is important to remember that Apple does not recommend AirTag as an anti-theft device, nor does it recommend using it to track children or pets.

AirTag was announced at Apple’s “Spring Loade” event in April 2021. It can be purchased for $29 or a four-piece set for $99. The small circular tracker is designed to be clipped to objects that are usually misplaced, such as luggage, keys, backpacks, etc.
