Firefox 91 supports automatically opening downloaded content just like Chrome

In Chrome, when the download is in progress, if you click on it, you will see a message Open in X seconds at the bottom, and the content will automatically open after the download is complete. Mozilla is implementing the same behavior for downloads in Firefox 91 as part of its efforts to improve the browser’s download panel.

The current download experience of the Firefox browser is to start downloading and click Save File, and then the Firefox browser displays the download progress information through the download icon on its toolbar. Once the download is over, you can open the file from the download panel or in the folder included in the download.

And if you use the Chrome browser and click the download function area during the download process, the file will automatically open after the download is complete, without you having to wait and return to view. It can be seen that the Chrome browser has driven the creators of the Firefox browser to copy this feature.

Now, Firefox 91 already supports automatic opening after downloading. This feature is currently in the pref stage and is disabled by default. Normally, the Firefox browser will save the download to a temporary folder and move it to the download folder from there.

Now, if you activate the new download panel improvements in version 91 of the Firefox browser and specify that the Firefox browser will store downloads in the download folder, it will now automatically open downloads of certain file types by default. Otherwise, some files will open the download directory.

To enable Chrome-like open when download is complete in Firefox 91, follow these steps:

  • Visit about:config
  • Create a boolean parameter named browser.download.improvements_to_download_panel in the setting page and set its value to true.
  • When the download panel shows that the download is in progress, click it, and then Firefox will display the message Open in X seconds.
